Hematological and biochemical characteristics during the transport of dog snapper Lutjanus jocu (Perciformes: Lutjanidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Oliveira,Bruno L.; Souza,Rodrigo M.; Silva Filho,Jorge P.; Gomes,Levy C.; Fernandes,Luiz F. Loureiro.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate stress responses in dog snapper (Lutjanus jocu) during transport by evaluating their hematological and biochemical responses. Twenty-five wild dog snapper specimens were used in the experiment (220 ± 68 g and 24.5 ± 2.5 cm total length). Blood samples were collected prior to transport (control), and fish were placed in two transport boxes, one with anesthetic and one without anesthetic. Immediately after transport and after 24 h, blood was collected from the fish that underwent each treatment (with anesthetic and without anesthetic). Biochemical and hematological results demonstrated the inefficiency of benzocaine as a stress reliever during handling and transport. Biochemical parameters revealed the...

Investigation of local anesthetic and antimycobacterial activity of Ottonia martiana Miq. (Piperaceae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
CUNICO,MIRIAM M.; TREBIEN,HERBERT A.; GALETTI,FÁBIO C.; MIGUEL,OBDULIO G.; MIGUEL,MARILIS D.; AUER,CELSO G.; SILVA,CÉLIO L.; SOUZA,ANA OLÍVIA DE.
ABSTRACT Ottonia martiana is a plant popularly known in Brazil by the use for toothache. Ethanolic extract (EE), hexane fraction (HF), dichloromethane fraction (DF) and piperovatine obtained from O. martiana were assayed in vitro and in vivo. The acute toxicity of EE was determined, and LD50 values of 164.5 and 65.0 mg/kg by the oral and intraperitoneal routes, respectively, indicated a high toxicity for EE in vivo, explaining its popular use by topical administration only. A local anesthetic-like effect of EE and its fractions was observed in experimental models using pain induction, and such effect involved an analgesic action. The antimycobacterial activity of EE, HF, DF and piperovatine was evaluated against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv ATCC 27924....

Standardization of 2-phenoxyethanol as anesthetic for juvenile Brycon cephalus (Gunther, 1869): the use in field procedures Ciência Rural
Inoue,Luis Antônio Kioshi Aoki; Santos Neto,Cristiano dos; Moraes,Gilberto.
Hyper motility is a negative factor in fish handling procedures due to the risks of damages to the animals. Chemicals are widely used to anesthetize fish during biometry and many other handling procedures. 2-Phenoxyethanol is largely employed, but many studies are necessary about tropical fish responses. The present research evaluated the anesthesia induction time for juvenile matrinxã submitted to eight different levels of 2-phenoxyethanol. The range of 2-phenoxyethanol concentration was 250-600mg liter-1. Induction time of anesthesia decreased as a function of 2-phenoxyethanol concentrations. Fish were safely anesthetized approximately after one minute of exposure to 2-phenoxyethanol batches in concentrations above 400mg/liter, and the recover period was...
